I made this cross stitch in 1995, when I was 15-16. I think I must have done it as a way of relaxing whilst studying for my GCSEs!
It shows the Bishop’s Eye rose window in Lincoln Cathedral (which is opposite a window called the Dean’s Eye, but I didn’t get round to doing that cross stitch!).
I made it for an elderly relative who is now downsizing, and I was touched to discover it had a label on the back saying it had been made by me in 1995 and was to be returned to me!
Cross stitch was the first craft I really got into. I initially learnt at school and at home using very big Aida and, by the time I was 11, I was working on really quite big projects. I should take some photos of them next time I’m at my Mum’s!
I loved doing cross stitch. I used to stitch in front of the TV. I carried on when I went to university, although with less time I didn’t do as much. I was also running out of things to do with the finished projects. Then, in 2004, I was given a little knitted mobile phone ‘sleeping bag’, thought ‘I could do that’, got a copy of Stitch n’ bitch from the library and taught myself to knit.
I haven’t done any cross stitch since as I became so engrossed with knitting, although sometimes I think I’d like to have another go. I still have my equipment and a couple of projects I never started.
What path led you to knitting?
